OEM or aftermarket?
The brew basket is a cheap plastic part that produces two expensive-looking symptoms: a counter full of coffee, and a machine that tastes stale no matter how fresh the beans are.
Rule out the grind before buying anything
An overflowing basket is far more often a brewing problem than a broken part. Coffee ground too fine packs down and slows drainage below the rate water arrives. Too much coffee does the same thing by filling the basket to the rim.
Coarsen the grind a step and cut the dose. If the flooding stops, there was never anything wrong with the basket. This single check saves most of the money people spend on this part.
The drip-stop tab
Underneath the basket is a small tab or plunger that seals the outlet when you lift the carafe out mid-brew. It has two failure modes and they look completely different.
Stuck closed and the basket fills and overflows even with a correct dose. Stuck open and coffee drips onto the warming plate whenever the pot is out. Either one means the basket assembly is done, because the tab is not separately serviceable.
Patterns are not interchangeable
The 4-6 cup machines use a smaller basket with a closed bottom and different outlet geometry from the 12-cup models. They will not swap. Match the basket to your machine’s capacity and range rather than assuming Mr. Coffee uses one part across the line.
The espresso machines – ECM and Cafe Barista – take a portafilter basket instead, which is a different part entirely.
The stale-taste case
Coffee oil soaks into plastic over years and goes rancid there. A basket can look perfectly clean and still be the reason a machine tastes old. Wash it properly with detergent rather than rinsing it under the tap, and if a descale plus a real clean has not fixed the taste, replace the basket. It is a few dollars against a machine you were about to throw out.
Baskets that fit
The OEM assembly is the safe choice for a broken drip-stop; a reusable mesh basket filter is the cheaper option if the basket itself is sound and you simply want to stop buying papers.
