Breville Steam Wand Not Working: Blocked, Not Broken
Nine times out of ten the wand is blocked with dried milk, not faulty. Milk dries inside the tip within minutes of use and sets hard. Unscrew the tip, soak it, clear the holes with a pin. Only if a clear wand still gives no steam is the boiler or solenoid the suspect.
Causes, most likely first
Work down this list in order. The first two cost nothing to check.
- Dried milk in the tip — The holes are under a millimetre across and milk sets inside them within minutes of use.
- Milk dried further up the wand — Happens when the wand is purged but never wiped, so residue creeps back up the tube.
- Machine not up to steam temperature — The steam light is a target, not a confirmation. Wait for it to settle.
- Water tank low or not seated — The pump will not draw and you get a hiss with no steam.
- Descale overdue — Scale in the steam circuit reduces flow long before it stops it.
- Solenoid or boiler fault — Rare, and only worth suspecting after a genuinely clear wand still gives nothing.
The fix, step by step

Purge the wand first
Point it into the drip tray and open steam for two seconds. If nothing comes out at all, the blockage is total.

Unscrew the tip
The tip comes off by hand on the Barista Express, Pro and Touch. If it will not turn, soak the whole wand end in hot water for ten minutes first.

Soak the tip
Hot water for ten minutes, or a cleaning tablet dissolved in hot water if it has been neglected. Do not use anything abrasive on the holes.

Clear each hole with a pin
Work from the outside in. The holes are the whole mechanism - one blocked hole halves the swirl, all blocked means no steam.

Check the wand tube itself
With the tip off, run steam for a second. Strong steam from the bare tube means the tip was the only problem.

Refit and purge
Screw the tip back on hand-tight and purge again before touching milk.

If still nothing, descale
A clear wand with weak steam is a scale problem, not a wand problem.
A Breville steam wand that has stopped working is almost never broken. The holes in the tip are under a millimetre across, milk dries inside them within minutes of use, and dried milk sets hard. That is the whole fault in the overwhelming majority of cases.
This matters because the alternative diagnosis — a failed solenoid or boiler — is not a home repair and is expensive. Rule out the ninety-percent cause first, and do it in fifteen minutes with a pin.
Tell a blockage from a steam fault
- Nothing at all comes out — total blockage in the tip. Most common.
- Steam comes out but milk will not texture — partial blockage. One blocked hole kills the whirlpool while still letting steam through.
- Weak steam that has faded over months — that is scale in the circuit, not milk in the tip. Descaling is the fix.
- Hissing with no steam, tank recently refilled — check the tank is seated on its valve before anything else.
Why the tip blocks so fast
Steaming leaves a film of milk inside the tip at around 60 °C. That is close to ideal drying conditions, and the residue sets within minutes. Purging afterwards clears the tube but not always the tip itself, which is why a wand that gets purged religiously can still block.
The habit that prevents it is purging and wiping while the wand is still warm. Wet milk comes off with a cloth; dried milk has to be soaked out.
What this is not
Milk residue in the wand is a different job from either of the machine’s other two maintenance tasks, and people routinely do the wrong one:
- Descaler dissolves mineral scale in the water circuit. It does nothing to milk.
- Cleaning tablets clear coffee oils from the group head during a backflush. They do nothing to the wand either.
- The wand needs hot water, soaking time, and a pin. That is all.
When the wand genuinely is not the problem
If the tip is off, the bare tube gives strong steam, and the machine is at temperature, then the wand is fine and the fault is upstream. Descale first — it is cheap and it is the usual answer. If a descaled machine still gives no steam from a clear wand, the solenoid or the boiler is next, and at that point the question becomes whether the repair is worth it against the price of a machine.
If the frother is the only part that has failed and the rest of the machine is fine, a standalone frother is often cheaper than the service call.

How do I stop it happening again?
Purge for one second immediately after every use and wipe the wand while it is still warm. Milk that is wiped off wet comes off with a cloth; milk left to dry has to be soaked out. This single habit prevents almost every steam wand problem on these machines.
The tip will not unscrew.
Do not force it with pliers - the tip is soft metal and rounds off. Soak the end of the wand in a jug of hot water for ten minutes, which softens the milk holding it, then try again by hand.
Steam comes out but the milk will not texture.
That is usually position rather than blockage. The tip needs to sit just under the surface, off-centre, to start a whirlpool. Also check that all the tip holes are clear - one blocked hole is enough to kill the swirl while still letting steam through.
No steam at all, and the wand is definitely clear.
Check the water tank is full and seated, then let the machine reach temperature properly. If a clear wand at full temperature still gives nothing, the fault is in the steam circuit - descale first, and if that changes nothing the solenoid or boiler is next, which is not a home repair.
Can I put the tip in the dishwasher?
It will survive, but the dishwasher will not clear the holes - dried milk inside a sub-millimetre hole needs soaking and a pin. Wash it by hand and keep the pin nearby.
Weak steam that got worse over months.
That is scale, not milk. Milk blockages appear suddenly; scale reduces steam gradually as it narrows the circuit. Run a descale cycle through all three outlets.
