Cleaning tablets dissolve coffee oils out of the group head during a backflush. They do nothing about scale, and descaler does nothing about oils. Bitter, muddy shots are oils. Slow or cool shots are scale. Most machines that taste wrong need both jobs done.

OEM or aftermarket?
Cleaning tablets are the half of espresso machine maintenance that most owners never get to. Descaling is well publicised because the machine nags about it. Nothing nags you about coffee oils, so they build up in the group head for a year or two until the shots taste bitter and muddy and the obvious suspect — the beans, the grind, the water — keeps turning out to be innocent.
A cleaning tablet is an alkaline detergent that dissolves those oils during a backflush. It has no effect whatsoever on mineral scale, and descaler has no effect whatsoever on oils. They are two different deposits in two different parts of the machine.

Oils or scale? Read the cup
You can tell them apart without opening anything, and it is worth doing before you buy the wrong product:
- Bitter, muddy, harsh shots with normal flow rate — coffee oils. The group head, shower screen and three-way valve are coated. Backflush with a tablet.
- Slow, thin or cool shots, weak steam — mineral scale in the boiler and water lines. That needs a descaler, and no amount of backflushing will touch it.
- Both at once — common on a machine that has never been maintained. Do the backflush first; it takes ten minutes and often accounts for more of the taste problem than people expect.
The blind basket is not optional
A backflush works by giving the water nowhere to go forward. You fit the blind basket — the unperforated one, usually still in the accessory box unused — drop in a tablet, and run the pump. Pressure builds, the three-way valve opens, and water and detergent are forced backwards through the shower screen and out through the valve into the drip tray, carrying the oils with them.
Without the blind basket there is no back pressure, the tablet simply dissolves and drains out of the spouts, and you have cleaned nothing. This is the single most common way a backflush gets done wrong.
Match the basket to the group: 54 mm for the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Infuser and Duo Temp Pro; 58 mm for the Dual Boiler and Oracle. The same split applies to the portafilter and the group head gasket, so if you have ever ordered either of those you already know which size you are.
How often
Far more often than descaling. Oils accumulate every single time you pull a shot, while scale accumulates from the water over months.
- A few shots a day — backflush weekly.
- Occasional use — monthly is the floor.
- Plain water backflush — worth doing after each session; it costs nothing and delays the tablet.
A tub of 120 tablets is a multi-year supply at that rate, which is why the cost per clean is close to nothing and there is no reason to stretch the interval.
The machines that cannot backflush
The Bambino and Bambino Plus have no backflush cycle — there is no three-way valve arrangement to push water back through. That does not mean they stay clean; it means the cleaning is manual. Dissolve a tablet in hot water and soak the portafilter basket and the shower screen, then wipe the group. You get most of the same result with more effort.
The steam wand is a third job
Tablets do not clean the steam wand, and neither does descaler. Milk residue is its own category. Purge the wand for a second after every use and wipe it while it is still warm, which prevents almost all wand problems. A wand that is already blocked needs the tip soaked in hot water, and if that does not clear it, unscrewed and the holes cleared with a pin.
Doing both jobs properly
A machine that has never been maintained needs both a backflush and a descale, in that order — the backflush is quicker and tells you how much of the problem was taste rather than flow. Then run the descale cycle through all three outlets, not just the group head, and fit a fresh water filter afterwards.
Between them, a tub of tablets, a bottle of descaler and a pack of filters is a year of maintenance for well under the cost of one service.
