How to Clean a Breville Espresso Machine: The Backflush Nobody Does

How often Weekly for daily use, monthly minimum  Work out your real interval →
Short version

Cleaning a Breville means backflushing coffee oils out of the group head with a blind basket and a tablet. It is a different job from descaling, takes ten minutes, and is what fixes bitter shots. Weekly for a machine pulling a few shots a day.

Step by step

  1. Fit the blind basket

Swap the normal basket for the unperforated one. Without it there is no back pressure and nothing gets cleaned.

  2. Drop in a tablet

One tablet in the blind basket. Lock the portafilter into the group.

  3. Run the cycle

Start a shot. Pressure builds, the three-way valve opens, and water is forced backwards through the shower screen into the drip tray.

  4. Repeat five times

Run, pause about ten seconds, run again. The pause is what lets the detergent work.

  5. Rinse without a tablet

Same blind basket, no tablet, five more cycles until the water in the tray runs clear.

  6. Clean the screen and gasket

Take the portafilter out, brush the shower screen, and wipe the group head gasket. This is where the residue you just loosened ends up.

  7. Flush the normal basket

Refit the standard basket and run one shot of water to clear anything left in the spouts.

Descaling gets all the attention because the machine nags you about it. Nothing nags you about coffee oils, so they build up in the group head for a year or two until the shots taste bitter and muddy, and the beans, the grind and the water all get blamed in turn.

Cleaning a Breville means backflushing — forcing water and an alkaline cleaning tablet backwards through the group head to clear those oils out. It takes ten minutes and it is not the same job as descaling.

Which problem do you actually have?

Read the cup before you buy anything:

  • Bitter, muddy, harsh shots at a normal flow rate — coffee oils. Backflush, which is this guide.
  • Slow or thin shots, weak steam, coffee not properly hot — mineral scale. That needs a descaler instead.
  • Both — common on a machine that has never been maintained. Backflush first; it is quicker and often accounts for more of the taste problem than people expect.

The blind basket is the whole trick

A backflush works by giving the water nowhere to go forward. You fit the blind basket — the unperforated one, usually still sitting unused in the accessory box — and the pump builds pressure until the three-way valve opens and pushes water back through the shower screen and out into the drip tray.

Fit the perforated basket by mistake and the tablet simply dissolves and drains out of the spouts. That is the most common way this job gets done wrong, and it looks identical to doing it right.

Match the size to your group: 54 mm on the Barista Express, Barista Pro, Barista Touch, Infuser and Duo Temp Pro; 58 mm on the Dual Boiler and Oracle. It is the same split that applies to the portafilter.

Do the shower screen and gasket too

The backflush loosens residue; the screen and the group head gasket are where a lot of it ends up. Brush the screen and wipe the gasket while the portafilter is out — it adds thirty seconds.

While you are there, look at the gasket itself. A gasket that has gone hard and shiny has stopped sealing, which lets grounds past into the group and recontaminates it on every shot. If yours is more than a year old and the portafilter has started needing a harder twist to lock, that is the tell.

What this will not fix

Backflushing clears oils. It does nothing for scale, nothing for a blocked steam wand, and nothing for a machine that is slow because the water path has furred up. If the shots are slow rather than bitter, run a descale cycle through all three outlets instead — and fit a fresh BWF100 water filter afterwards, because descaler exhausts the old cartridge in one pass.

What to buy

A tub of tablets is a multi-year supply at weekly use, which is why there is no reason to stretch the interval.

Common questions

Is this the same as descaling?

No, and this is the single most useful distinction on these machines. Backflushing uses an alkaline tablet to clear coffee oils from the group head. Descaling uses acid to clear mineral scale from the boiler and water lines. Bitter, muddy shots are oils. Slow, thin or cool shots are scale. Doing one does not do the other.

Do I really need the blind basket?

Yes. A backflush works by giving the water nowhere to go forward, which forces it back through the three-way valve. Without the blind basket the tablet dissolves and runs out of the spouts, and you have cleaned nothing. It is the unperforated basket that came in the accessory box.

How often?

Weekly if you pull a few shots a day, monthly as a floor for occasional use. Far more often than descaling, because oils accumulate on every shot while scale accumulates from the water over months.

My Bambino has no cleaning cycle.

The Bambino and Bambino Plus have no backflush function. Dissolve a tablet in hot water and soak the basket and shower screen instead, then wipe the group. Most of the same result, more effort.

Can I use vinegar or dish soap instead?

No. Vinegar is an acid and does nothing to oils, and dish soap leaves a residue that will taste worse than what you started with. Use a tablet formulated for espresso machines.

The shots are still bitter afterwards.

Then check the shower screen and the group head gasket. A gasket that has hardened stops sealing properly and lets grounds past into the group, which recontaminates it after every shot.

What happens if you skip it

These are the failures that scale causes, in the order we see them.
