Descaling a Breville Barista Pro and Precision Brewer
Both prompt you when they think descaling is due, and both count usage rather than measuring scale, so on hard water you will be due before the machine asks. The Barista Pro has three outlets to run solution through; the Precision Brewer is a drip machine and has one.

Remove the water filter
The BWF100 cartridge comes out of the reservoir first. Descaler exhausts it in one cycle.

Mix to the pack dose
Follow the dose on the pack you bought, not a number from elsewhere - concentrations differ between brands. Fill the tank to MAX.

Start the descale cycle
On the Barista Pro, hold the 2-cup and POWER buttons together. On the Precision Brewer, use the descale option in the menu.

Barista Pro only - run all three outlets
The cycle prompts you through the group head, then the hot water spout, then the steam wand. Skipping the last two leaves scale in those circuits.

Let it stand
Pause with solution still in the machine for twenty to thirty minutes. Contact time is what dissolves scale; flow rate is not.

Rinse with two full tanks
Refill with plain water and run the rinse phase through to the end. The machine counts volume, so a tank that runs dry stops the count.

Fit a fresh filter
New BWF100 in the reservoir, and reset the filter reminder if your model has one.
These two Brevilles both tell you when descaling is due, and both are counting rather than measuring. The prompt is driven by how much water has passed through, not by how much scale is actually in there, so on genuinely hard water you will be overdue before the machine says anything.
The solution itself is the same for both. What differs is how many outlets you have to push it through.
Barista Pro: three outlets, not one
The Barista Pro pushes water out of three places — the group head, the hot water spout, and the steam wand. They share a boiler and a pump but split into separate paths afterwards, and the descale cycle prompts you through each one in turn.
People run the group head stage, notice the shots have improved, and stop. Then the steam wand still has no pressure and the machine looks like it needs a service. It needed the second half of a cycle.
Precision Brewer: one path, same solution
The Precision Brewer is a drip machine, so there is a single water circuit and no wand. The cycle is shorter and less fussy. It still takes the BWF100 filter out first, because descaler exhausts a charcoal cartridge in one pass regardless of machine type.
Why the alert comes straight back
This is the most common complaint on both models, and it is almost never a faulty sensor. The machine counts the volume that flows through during the rinse phases. A reservoir that ran dry partway stops the count, the cycle never registers as finished, and the prompt returns.
Fill to MAX before the rinse phases rather than topping up as you go, and run the cycle through to the end.
Bitter is a different job
Descaler dissolves mineral scale and does nothing to coffee oils. If the shots have gone bitter and muddy rather than slow and cool, what you need is a backflush with a cleaning tablet, which is a completely different chemical doing a completely different job.
A machine that has never been maintained usually needs both. Do the backflush first — it takes ten minutes and tells you how much of the problem was taste rather than flow.

Is the Precision Brewer the same?
No, and it is simpler. It is a drip machine with a single water path, so there is one circuit to flush and no steam wand to worry about. It still takes the same solution and still wants the filter out first.
How often, really?
Every two to three months on hard water, three to six on soft. The on-screen prompt is a counter, not a scale sensor, so treat it as a floor rather than an instruction. Slower shots and weaker steam are the reliable signals.
Can I use vinegar?
On the Precision Brewer, at a push - it is a drip machine and you can flush it. On the Barista Pro I would not: more seals, a three-way solenoid valve, and no easy way to verify you have rinsed it out. A bottle of proper descaler costs a few dollars more.
The shots are bitter rather than slow.
Then this is the wrong job. Bitter means coffee oils in the group head, which needs a backflush with a cleaning tablet, not acid. Slow and cool means scale.
