Baratza Ring Burr Holder: The Plastic Part That Fails First

In short

On an Encore the ring burr holder is plastic, and it is the part that cracks. The symptom is a grinder that runs but produces almost nothing, or grind size that wanders between shots. The burrs themselves are steel and usually outlast several holders.

Model Notes

Encore ESP (ZCG495) Same 40 mm burr set - listings usually name both.
Virtuoso and Virtuoso+ Shares the holder and gasket family; confirm on the listing.

OEM or aftermarket?

Aftermarket is fine here Provided the dimensions match exactly. Check the critical size above against the old part before ordering — parts that look identical in photos frequently are not.

The Encore is a well-built grinder with one deliberate weak point: the ring burr holder is plastic. It is the part that cracks, and when it does the symptoms look like something far more expensive.

The burrs themselves are steel and typically outlast several holders. So when an Encore starts behaving badly, the holder is the first thing to look at, not the burr set.

The two symptoms, and why they confuse people

  • The motor runs but almost nothing comes out. Sounds like a dead grinder. Usually the ring is not seating, so the gap has opened up and beans pass through barely touched.
  • Grind size wanders between shots. Sounds like a calibration problem. It is the ring lifting a fraction under load, which widens the gap mid-grind — so the number on the dial stops meaning the same thing.

Neither looks like a cracked piece of plastic, which is why people replace burrs that were fine.

Check it before you buy anything

Lift the hopper off, take the ring burr out by hand, and look at the plastic holder underneath. The crack is usually radial, starting at one of the locating tabs, and it can be a hairline that only opens under load.

While it is apart, check for a stone or a stray bean wedged in the burrs — that is the free explanation and it produces the same “runs but grinds nothing” symptom. Our guide to a Baratza Encore that will not grind works through that in order.

Burrs, holder, gaskets — three different parts

Worth separating, because they fail for different reasons and on different timescales:

  • Ring burr holder — plastic, cracks, fails suddenly. This part.
  • Burrs — steel, dull slowly over years. Replace when grind is coarser and slower at every setting.
  • Gaskets — perish with age and heat, let grounds migrate. Cheap, worth having spare.

This one is genuinely a home repair

Nothing here carries mains voltage and nothing is under pressure. The hopper lifts off, the ring burr comes out by hand, and the holder is accessible directly beneath it. That is unusual for the kind of part that causes this much confusion.

If the burrs are also caked, clean them properly while the machine is open — grinder cleaning tablets shift the oils that a brush leaves behind.

Questions about this part

How do I know the holder is the problem and not the burrs?

Take the hopper and the ring burr out and look at the plastic holder it sits in. A crack, usually radial from one of the tabs, is the failure. Steel burrs dull over thousands of kilos rather than failing suddenly, so a grinder that changed behaviour over days or weeks is telling you about the holder, not the burrs.

The grinder runs but almost nothing comes out.

Check for a bean or a stone wedged between the burrs first - that is the cheapest explanation. If the burrs are clear and the motor sounds unloaded, the holder is not seating the ring burr properly and the gap has opened up.

Grind size drifts between shots.

Classic cracked-holder symptom. The ring lifts a fraction under grinding load, the gap widens, and the setting you dialled in no longer means the same thing. It looks like a calibration problem and is not.

Do I need to replace the burrs at the same time?

Usually not. Baratza burrs are steel and last a very long time in home use. Replace them when the grind has become noticeably slower and coarser at every setting over months, which is dulling, not cracking.

Are the gaskets a separate part?

Yes, and they are worth having on hand. The gaskets sit around the burr assembly and perish with age and heat; a perished gasket lets grounds migrate where they should not and adds to the wander.

Is this a job I can do?

Yes - it is the most approachable repair on the machine. The hopper lifts off, the ring burr comes out by hand, and the holder is accessible underneath. No mains wiring and nothing under pressure.
