Step by step

  1. Weekly chute brush

The chute between burrs and container is where retention lives.

  2. Wash and DRY the container

A damp container makes grounds stick far worse than a dirty one.

  3. Monthly tablets

Empty hopper, run at medium, discard output, purge with beans.

  4. Cut the static

A drop of water stirred into the beans before grinding, and tap the container before removing it.

  5. Burrs out every few months

Note the setting first, brush dry, refit squarely.

OXO’s burr grinders are conical-burr machines with a plastic grounds container, and that combination produces a specific complaint: grounds clinging everywhere, clumping in the chute, and a dose that varies because some of the last grind is still inside the machine. Most of that is static and retention rather than dirt, and the two need different treatment.

Weekly: the chute and the bin

The chute between the burrs and the container is where retention lives. Brush it out weekly with a stiff dry brush – a few seconds of work. Wash the grounds container in warm soapy water and, importantly, dry it completely before refitting. A damp container makes grounds stick far worse than a dirty one.

Monthly: tablets through the burrs

Empty the hopper, run cleaning tablets through at a medium setting, discard everything that comes out, then purge with a small dose of beans. This clears the oil varnish that makes the burrs feel like they have lost their edge.

Cutting the static

Static clumping is not a fault and no amount of cleaning removes it. Two things reduce it reliably:

  • A drop of water on the beans before grinding – literally a drop, stirred through. It is the standard trick and it works.
  • Tapping the container before removing it, so the clinging grounds fall rather than following the container out.

Grinding into a metal container instead of plastic also helps, if you have one.

Every few months: burrs out

  1. Unplug the grinder and empty the hopper.
  2. Note the grind setting before moving the adjustment.
  3. Remove the hopper and lift out the upper burr assembly.
  4. Brush both burrs and the chamber dry. No water on the burrs.
  5. Refit squarely, then run a small dose of beans and discard it.

When it is not cleanliness

If the grind is inconsistent at every setting after a full clean – fines mixed with boulders no matter what you do – the burrs are worn or misaligned rather than dirty. And a grinder that runs but delivers nothing has a jam or a broken drive, not a residue problem.

Static is physics, not dirt

Grinding generates a charge. Dry beans, low humidity and a plastic grounds bin together produce enough static to make grounds cling to every surface and jump out of the container when you remove it. No amount of cleaning changes this, which is why people clean repeatedly and stay frustrated.

The standard fix is the Ross Droplet Technique: stir a single drop of water into the beans before grinding. One drop for a full dose — enough to break the charge, not enough to affect the grind or gum the burrs. It works immediately and costs nothing.

The other half of the fix is mechanical: tap the container against the machine before removing it, so the clinging grounds fall rather than following the container out.

Retention lives in the chute

Between the burrs and the container there is a short passage where grounds accumulate. On a conical grinder this passage is where dose variation comes from: some of what you grind stays behind, and some of what came out was ground yesterday.

Brushing it weekly is a few seconds of work and it fixes both problems at once — more consistent dosing, and no stale grounds in a fresh shot.

Dry the container, properly

Washing the grounds bin is fine and worth doing. Refitting it damp is not: moisture makes grounds cling far worse than static does, and it accelerates the oil film building on the walls. Let it dry fully, or dry it with a cloth before it goes back.

Monthly tablets, and what they do not do

Tablets scour oil varnish off the burr faces. They do not sharpen, do not clear a jam, and do not correct misalignment. If the grind is still inconsistent at every setting after a clean — fines and boulders together, no setting producing an even result — the burrs are worn or seated badly, and that is a parts question rather than a cleaning one.

A note on grind adjustment

Adjust while the grinder is running wherever the manual allows it. Turning the adjustment on a stationary burr set forces the burrs against trapped grounds, which is the most common way home users damage a carrier. If you must adjust with it off, move in small steps and never force it past resistance.

Common questions

Why do grounds clump and stick in my OXO grinder?

Static, not dirt. A single drop of water stirred into the beans before grinding removes most of it.

Can I wash the burrs?

No. Water on burrs causes rust. Only the grounds container gets washed, and it must be fully dry before refitting.

How often should I run cleaning tablets?

Monthly with daily use, more often with oily dark roasts.

Grind is still inconsistent after cleaning. What now?

Worn or misaligned burrs rather than residue. Cleaning will not fix that.
