Breville Water Tank Replacement: BES870 Assembly and the Lid Sold Apart
Breville sells this as a water tank assembly for the BES870 Barista Express family, and the lid is a separate part that breaks first. Before buying an assembly, work out which of three things failed: the lid hinge (cosmetic), the base valve (causes overnight dripping into the drip tray and gets mistaken for a failed pump), or a cracked tank body. Stand the full tank on the counter for an hour - if it holds, the tank is fine and the seat in the machine needs cleaning.
Does it fit your machine?
Match your model number exactly — the code on the rating label, not the name on the front of the machine.
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| Breville Barista Express BES870 | Full water tank assembly, or the lid on its own. |
| Breville Barista Pro / Touch | Different tank profile - check the model reference before ordering. |
| Nespresso / Krups multi-fit listings | Do not assume these fit a BES870 just because Breville appears in the title. |

OEM or aftermarket?
The Barista Express tank is sold as a water tank assembly rather than a bare plastic box, and that is worth knowing because the assembly includes the parts that actually fail. The reference to look for is the BES870 family.
What usually goes
Three things, in order of how often they happen:
- The lid. It is a separate part. The hinge and the tab break long before the tank does, and a broken lid does not stop the machine working – it just makes filling irritating.
- The valve at the base. The tank seals against a spring valve when it seats. Scale or grit on that seal makes the machine drip into the drip tray when idle. People often replace a pump over this.
- The tank body. Hairline cracks at the corners, usually from being dropped in a sink. This is the one that genuinely needs the assembly.
The idle-drip test
If your machine loses water into the drip tray overnight, lift the tank out and stand it on the counter full. If it holds level for an hour, the tank is fine and the seat in the machine needs cleaning. If it drains, the tank’s own valve is the fault and the assembly is the fix.
Compatible tanks
Some listings cover Nespresso, Krups and Breville in one product description. Read those carefully – a tank that fits a Vertuo does not fit a Barista Express, and the shared listing usually means one of the models in the list is the real fit and the others are keyword padding.
Do not run it dry
The Barista Express pump is not designed to run without water, and the tank’s low-level sensor is not a guarantee. Repeated dry running is the fastest way to turn a cheap tank problem into an expensive pump problem.
Weighing this against a new machine? Is a Breville Barista Express worth repairing? runs the four numbers that decide it.

Questions about this part
My machine drips into the drip tray overnight. Is the tank at fault?
Test it: lift the full tank out and stand it on the counter for an hour. If it holds level, the tank valve is fine and the seat inside the machine needs cleaning. If it drains onto the counter, the tank's own base valve is leaking and the assembly is the fix. People replace pumps over this.
Can I buy just the lid?
Yes - the lid is a separate part and it is usually what breaks first. A broken lid does not stop the machine working, so there is no need to buy a whole assembly for it.
A listing says it fits Nespresso, Krups and Breville. Will it fit my Barista Express?
Be careful with those. A tank that fits a Vertuo does not fit a BES870. Multi-brand listings usually have one genuine fit and the rest is keyword padding - check for the explicit BES870 reference.
What cracks the tank?
Almost always being dropped in the sink while washing. The cracks start at the corners and are hairline at first, so a tank that seems to be emptying faster than it should is worth inspecting before you look elsewhere.
