De’Longhi Cleaning Tablets: For the Brew Unit, Not the Boiler
De'Longhi cleaning tablets remove coffee oil from the brew unit; descaler removes limescale from the boiler. They are different deposits with different causes and neither substitutes for the other. The tablet goes into the brew unit or a blind basket in the portafilter and the machine runs a cleaning cycle - it does not go in the water tank. Bitter, muddy shots at good pressure point to oil; slow and noisy points to scale.
Does it fit your machine?
Match your model number exactly — the code on the rating label, not the name on the front of the machine.
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| De'Longhi manual espresso machines with removable brew unit | Tablet goes in the brew unit chamber. |
| De'Longhi machines with a portafilter | Tablet in a blind basket, then a backflush cycle. |
| Any De'Longhi | Does not replace descaling - that is a separate cycle with descaler in the tank. |

OEM or aftermarket?
De’Longhi sells cleaning tablets for the brewing unit of its manual espresso machines, and they solve a different problem from descaler. Confusing the two is the most common mistake in this corner of machine maintenance.
Two different deposits
Limescale is mineral, it comes from the water, it forms inside the boiler and the pipework, and descaler removes it.
Coffee oil is organic, it comes from the beans, it builds up in the brew unit and the group, and it goes rancid. That is what tablets are for. No amount of descaling touches it.
A machine that pulls bitter, muddy shots with good pressure usually has an oil problem. A machine that is slow and noisy usually has a scale problem. A neglected machine has both, and they need separate cycles.
How the tablet is used
On De’Longhi manual machines the tablet goes into the portafilter with a blind basket, or into the brew unit chamber depending on the model, and the machine is run through a backflush or cleaning cycle. It is not dropped into the water tank – that is descaler’s route, and putting a tablet in the tank achieves nothing.
Own-brand versus compatible
Compatible tablets for De’Longhi machines are chemically similar and considerably cheaper per tablet. The one thing worth checking is tablet size: the chamber on some brew units takes a specific diameter, and an oversized tablet will not seat.
How often
Monthly for a machine making several drinks a day, quarterly for occasional use. Oil build-up is gradual and you will not notice the decline until you taste the difference after a clean.

Questions about this part
Can I put a cleaning tablet in the water tank?
No. Tablets work in the brew unit or in a blind basket in the portafilter, where the coffee oil actually is. The water tank is descaler's route. A tablet dropped in the tank does nothing useful.
Do tablets replace descaling?
No, and this is the mistake that ruins machines. Tablets remove organic coffee oil; descaler removes mineral limescale. A neglected machine needs both jobs, on separate cycles.
Are compatible tablets as good as De'Longhi's?
Chemically they are close and considerably cheaper per tablet. The one thing to check is diameter - some brew unit chambers take a specific size and an oversized tablet will not seat properly.
How often should I run one?
Monthly if you make several drinks a day, quarterly for occasional use. The decline is gradual enough that you will not notice it until you taste the difference after a clean.
