OEM or aftermarket?

Aftermarket is fine here Provided the dimensions match exactly. Check the critical size above against the old part before ordering — parts that look identical in photos frequently are not.

A grinder that has slowed down, sounds strained, or produces an inconsistent grind is usually not worn out. It is coated. Coffee beans are around fifteen percent oil, and that oil builds into a sticky varnish on the burrs, in the chute and around the exit. Cleaning tablets are food-safe grain pellets that scour that coating out as they pass through.

What they remove, and what they do not

  • They remove stale oil residue, fines packed into the burr carrier, and the build-up in the chute that causes clumping and retention.
  • They do not sharpen burrs, clear a foreign object, or fix a motor. If a grinder is jammed rather than sluggish, stop and open it instead.

How often

Once a month for daily home use, and more often with oily dark roasts – those are the ones that leave the most varnish. If you can smell rancid coffee when you open the hopper, you are overdue regardless of the calendar.

How to use them

  1. Empty the hopper of beans completely.
  2. Run the tablets through at a medium setting, following the dose on the packet. They grind like beans and come out as pale powder carrying the residue with them.
  3. Discard the output. All of it. This is not coffee.
  4. Run a small dose of beans through afterwards and discard that too, to purge any tablet residue.
  5. Brush out the chute and the catch bin while you are there.

When it is the burrs, not the residue

If cleaning makes no difference, look at the burrs themselves. Flat burrs and conical burrs both dull eventually – typically after several hundred kilograms of coffee for home users, which is years. Symptoms of genuinely worn burrs are a grind that will not get fine enough at any setting, and a lot of fines mixed with boulders no matter how you adjust it.

A grinder that runs but produces nothing at all is a different fault again – see grinder repairs for that.

What oil does to burrs

Roasted coffee is roughly fifteen percent oil by weight, and grinding drives that oil onto every surface it touches. Fresh, it is a thin film. Left for weeks it oxidises into a sticky varnish that holds fines against the burr faces and inside the carrier.

The effect is not that the burrs stop cutting. It is that the gap between them fills, so the grind gets coarser and less consistent at the same setting — which reads exactly like worn burrs, and sends people shopping for parts they do not need.

How tablets work

The tablets are food-safe grain-based pellets, harder and drier than coffee. Running them through scours the burr faces and pushes the loosened residue out through the chute. They come out as a pale powder carrying the dark oil with them — which is why the output looks alarming and must be discarded.

They are not abrasive in the way sand or rice is. That distinction matters: rice is hard enough to damage burrs and jam the mechanism, and it is the single worst piece of coffee advice that circulates.

Doing it properly

  1. Empty the hopper of beans completely. Leftover beans dilute the tablets and waste the dose.
  2. Set a medium grind. Too fine stresses the motor; too coarse means the tablets pass through without scouring.
  3. Run the dose on the packet through in one go.
  4. Discard every gram that comes out.
  5. Run a small dose of beans through and discard that too, to purge tablet residue before your next real coffee.
  6. Brush the chute and catch bin while you are there — that is where retention lives.

How often, by usage

  • Daily home use, medium roast — monthly.
  • Oily dark roasts — every two to three weeks. Dark roasts leave visibly more residue.
  • Occasional use — every couple of months, because oil oxidises on the timeline of weeks whether or not you grind.

The reliable signal is smell. Open the hopper and sniff: fresh coffee smells sweet, old oil smells rancid and slightly sharp. Rancid means overdue regardless of the calendar.

When the burrs really are worn

Home burrs last years — typically several hundred kilograms of coffee. Genuine wear shows as an inability to reach a fine enough grind at any setting, together with a mix of fines and boulders that no adjustment improves. If a full clean changes nothing, that is the time to price replacement burrs.

At a glance: monthly, about $20 a year, useless against worn burrs.

Questions about this part

How often should I use grinder cleaning tablets?

Monthly for daily home use, more often with oily dark roasts.

Do cleaning tablets sharpen the burrs?

No. They remove oil residue. Worn burrs need replacing.

Can I use rice instead?

Not in a burr grinder. Rice is harder than the tablets are designed to be and can damage burrs or jam the mechanism.

Do I need to run beans through afterwards?

Yes, a small dose, discarded. It purges any remaining tablet residue.
