Step by step
-
Monthly tablets
Empty hopper, run tablets at medium, discard output, then purge with a small dose of beans.
-
Unplug and remove the hopper
The switch is easy to knock. Unplug first.
-
Record the grind setting
Write the number down before turning anything.
-
Lift out the ring burr
Straight up by the tabs. Never lever it.
-
Brush both burrs dry
Cutting edges and the carrier underneath. No water, no soap.
-
Refit squarely
Line the tabs up with the slots. It seats flat or not at all.
The Encore is built to be opened, which is most of why it lasts. Two things matter when you clean one: doing the routine job often enough that the deep job stays rare, and not disturbing the grind calibration while you are in there.

Monthly: tablets and a brush
Empty the hopper, run cleaning tablets through at a medium setting, discard the output, then run a small dose of beans and discard that too. Brush out the catch bin and the exit chute. That is fifteen minutes a month and it prevents most of the problems people bring to a deep clean.
Every few months: burr out
- Unplug it. Not optional – the Encore starts with a switch that is easy to knock.
- Empty and remove the hopper. It lifts off after releasing the retaining screw or tab depending on your generation.
- Note the grind setting before you turn anything. Write the number down. This is the step people regret skipping.
- Lift out the ring burr. On the Encore it pulls straight up by the two tabs once the hopper is off. Do not lever it.
- Brush both burrs. A stiff dry brush – the one that comes with the grinder is fine. Get into the cutting edges and the carrier underneath.
- Vacuum or brush the chamber, then refit the ring burr, lining up its tabs with the slots. It seats flat or not at all – never force it.
Dry only, and here is why
Do not wash burrs in water and do not put anything from the grind path in a dishwasher. Baratza burrs are hardened steel and they rust, and a rusted burr edge is finished. If the varnish is heavy enough that brushing will not move it, that is what the tablets are for – not soap.
The calibration you can lose
Turning the burr carrier while the ring burr is out changes where the grind scale sits relative to the burrs. If your grind range has shifted after a clean – espresso settings now behaving like drip – that is what happened. Baratza publishes a calibration procedure for exactly this, and it is worth following rather than guessing your way back.
When cleaning is not the answer
A motor that hums without turning, or a grinder that stops mid-dose, is not a cleanliness problem. That is usually the gearbox or the motor, and the Encore is unusual in that those parts are individually available – which is why these grinders are worth repairing when most are not.
Why the Encore is worth maintaining
Most home grinders are sealed appliances: when the burrs dull or the gearbox strips, the machine is finished. The Encore is built the other way round — burrs, gearbox, motor and the adjustment ring are all available as parts, and the body comes apart with a screwdriver.
That changes the calculation on maintenance. Time spent keeping one clean is time spent on a machine that can realistically run for a decade, not one that is disposable at the first fault.
The calibration you can lose in five seconds
The grind scale on an Encore is a relationship between the ring burr’s position and the numbers printed on the collar. Lift the ring burr out, rotate the burr carrier underneath even slightly, and that relationship shifts — every number now means something different.
The symptom is unmistakable: settings that used to be espresso-fine now behave like drip, or the grinder starts touching the burrs together before it reaches the low numbers. Baratza publishes a calibration procedure for exactly this situation, and following it is far quicker than guessing your way back.
The prevention is one line in a notebook: write down the setting before you turn anything.
Why dry cleaning only
Encore burrs are hardened steel. Steel rusts, and a rusted cutting edge does not come back — it holds grounds, tears rather than shears, and produces exactly the inconsistent grind you were trying to fix. Water is also very good at turning residual coffee dust into a paste that sets inside the carrier.
So: a stiff dry brush, a vacuum or a blower, and tablets for anything the brush will not shift. Nothing wet in the grind path, ever.
What monthly cleaning actually prevents
- Retention. Old grounds sitting in the chute mix into the next dose, which is why the first shot after a few days off tastes stale.
- Drift. Residue packing between the burrs makes the effective gap smaller, so the same number gives a different grind over time.
- Strain. A clogged chute makes the motor work against a partial blockage every dose.
Faults cleaning will not fix
A motor that hums without turning is a jam or a stripped gearbox — open it and look rather than running it again. A grinder that stops mid-dose and restarts after cooling is thermal cut-out behaviour, usually from grinding large quantities back to back. Neither is dirt, and both are separately serviceable on this machine.

Common questions
Can I wash Baratza burrs in water?
No. They are hardened steel and will rust. Brush them dry, and use tablets for heavy residue.
How often should I deep clean an Encore?
Burrs out every three to six months, tablets monthly.
My grind range changed after cleaning. Why?
The burr carrier was turned while the ring burr was out, which shifts the scale. Baratza publishes a calibration procedure for it.
The motor hums but nothing grinds. Is that dirt?
No, that is the gearbox or motor. On an Encore those parts are individually available.

Baratza Encore Not Grinding: The Order to Check
The Encore is built to be repaired and its failure modes are documented. A bean jam and a stripped gear feel identical from outside, but they sound different.
