Breville Group Head Gasket: 54mm Size, Symptoms and Swap
Breville's 8-series machines - Barista Express BES870, Barista Pro BES878 and BES880 - use a 54mm group head gasket, often sold as a steam ring. Replace it when the portafilter has crept past centre, when espresso leaks from the rim during extraction, or every year or two on a machine in daily use.

OEM or aftermarket?
This is a silicone ring that costs under ten dollars and is responsible for a surprising share of the faults people take Breville machines in for. It is also easy to identify, because it produces three specific symptoms.
The three signs
The handle has crept. When the machine was new, the portafilter locked with the handle pointing somewhere near centre. As the gasket compresses and hardens, the portafilter travels further each time. If your handle now sits well past where it used to, the gasket has gone.
Espresso escapes from the rim. During a shot, coffee weeps out around the top edge of the portafilter instead of coming out the spouts. The seal is no longer holding pressure.
It has become stiff. A hardened gasket does not compress evenly, so locking the portafilter takes real force.
Rule out the cheap causes first
Before ordering anything, wipe the rim of the basket and the group seat, and try a slightly lower dose. Grounds on the rim stop the portafilter seating properly and an overfilled basket presses the puck into the shower screen. Both produce rim leaks that look exactly like a failed gasket.
If the leak survives a clean rim and a smaller dose, it is the gasket.
Getting the old one out
The old gasket will be stuck hard and slightly welded in place by heat and coffee oil. Use a wooden skewer or a plastic pick to work it free. Do not use a screwdriver. Scoring the metal seat is easy and permanent, and a scored seat will leak with a brand new gasket fitted, which turns a ten-dollar job into a real problem.
Clean the seat properly once the old ring is out, then press the new one in evenly all the way round.
Size: 54mm, with one exception
The Barista Express BES870, Barista Pro BES878, Barista Touch BES880, Infuser BES840 and Duo Temp Pro BES810 all take a 54mm gasket. The Dual Boiler BES920 and the Oracle use a 58mm group and take a different part entirely.
Gaskets that fit
Aftermarket silicone is fine here. Buying a multi-pack makes sense given the interval – you will need the next one in a year or two.

How do I know if my Breville group head gasket needs replacing?
Three signs. The portafilter handle has crept round past its original position because the gasket has compressed. Espresso leaks from the rim of the portafilter during extraction rather than coming out the spouts. Or the portafilter has become stiff and awkward to lock in. Any of those means the gasket has hardened.
How often should the gasket be changed?
Every one to two years on a machine used daily, sooner if you are seeing the symptoms. Silicone hardens with repeated heat cycling regardless of how much you use the machine, so an occasional-use machine still ages its gasket.
How do I get the old gasket out?
Work it out with something that will not gouge the group - a wooden skewer or a plastic pick. A screwdriver will score the metal seat, and a scored seat leaks with a new gasket in it. Take your time; the old one is usually stuck hard.
Does the Dual Boiler use the same gasket?
No. The Dual Boiler BES920 and the Oracle use a 58mm group, so 54mm gaskets are the wrong size. The 54mm part covers the Barista Express, Pro, Touch, Infuser and Duo Temp Pro.
Espresso is leaking from the sides of the portafilter. Is it always the gasket?
Usually, but check the obvious first: too much coffee in the basket, or grounds on the rim stopping the portafilter seating. Wipe the rim and try a lower dose. If it still leaks, it is the gasket.
