De’Longhi uses the same small set of lights to say several different things, and the difference between them is how they flash rather than which ones. A brief flash of everything is normal. A continuous flash of everything is not. Getting that distinction right saves a lot of unnecessary worry — and a lot of unnecessary descaler.

All the lights flash briefly, then stop
This is the machine turning on. De’Longhi’s documented answer for the La Specialista range is simply to wait for the machine to self-diagnose — the potential cause it lists is “the machine is turning on”.
If your lights flash for a second or two at switch-on and then settle, nothing is wrong. Do not descale, do not reset, do not unplug it.
All the lights flash and the machine will not work
A continuous flash with no function is a different signal entirely. De’Longhi’s help centre describes this as a general alarm, and the documented response is to switch the appliance off, disconnect it from the wall outlet, and contact Customer Services.
There is no user-side reset published for this state. If you have a machine in warranty, that call is the correct next step and should be your first one.
Lights flash for a few seconds and no drink is made
Different again, and much less serious. For the Dedica, De’Longhi’s published answer is to restart the coffee machine and see whether the problem persists. Switch it off at the machine, unplug it for a minute, and power it back up.
This is worth doing before anything else, because a controller that has latched into an error state after an interrupted brew behaves exactly like a hardware fault until it is power-cycled.
Steam light flashing on a Dedica
On the Dedica EC685 this one has a specific meaning: the appliance needs descaling. It is not a steam fault, and cleaning the wand will not clear it.
Run the descaling procedure with a descaler intended for espresso machines. Do not use vinegar in a Dedica — the water circuit has more seals and plastic than a drip brewer, and the residual smell survives an unreasonable number of rinse tanks.
Descale light flashing far too often
If you feel like you are descaling constantly, the machine is probably right and the setting is wrong. De’Longhi’s answer for both the Dedica Arte and the Magnifica S is to set the water hardness: if the hardness level is set to High, the machine schedules descaling far more frequently than your water actually requires.
Adjust the hardness setting to match your supply. If you do not know your water hardness, a test strip costs a couple of dollars and settles it — and the same answer also sets your kettle descaling interval.
Descale light still on after you descaled
De’Longhi’s published explanation is that the descale process was not correctly completed. Their instruction is to repeat the procedure using water only, and specifically to fill the water tank to the MAX level for the last two rinses.
That detail matters more than it looks. The machine counts a descale as complete based on volume passed through during the rinse phase, so short-filling the tank on the final rinses leaves the cycle unfinished and the light lit.
Which machine you have changes the answer
De’Longhi publishes these answers per model, and they are not identical across the range. The Dedica’s steam-light-equals-descaling meaning does not transfer to the La Specialista, which has its own alarm-light pages with images to match against.
Before acting on any light, check the model name printed on the machine and look up that model specifically. Where a pattern is not documented for your model, treat it as unknown rather than assuming it means the same as on a different one.
