De’Longhi Descaler: EcoDecalk and What the Cycle Misses

In short

De'Longhi machines take EcoDecalk or any descaler formulated for espresso machines. Run the machine's own cycle rather than improvising, and complete the rinses - De'Longhi's documented cause for a descale light that stays on after descaling is a cycle that was not finished, with the tank at MAX for the last two rinses.

Model Notes
Dedica EC680 / EC685 / EC695 Steam light flashing is the descale alert on this range.
Magnifica, Magnifica S, Magnifica Evo Bean-to-cup. Brew unit needs separate cleaning.
Dinamica and Dinamica Plus Same solution, own cycle.
La Specialista range Same solution. Descale light flashes when due.
Stilosa and EC155 Manual machines - descale by running solution through.

OEM or aftermarket?

Aftermarket is fine here Provided the dimensions match exactly. Check the critical size above against the old part before ordering — parts that look identical in photos frequently are not.

The descale alert is the most common thing a De’Longhi will ever say to you, and there are two documented reasons it does not go away when people think it should.

Two of these are documented by De’Longhi and both look like a broken sensor.

Know which light is the descale light

It is not always labelled as one. On the Dedica EC685 the steam light flashing is the descale alert – De’Longhi’s own help centre gives that answer directly. People clean the steam wand and wonder why nothing changes.

On the Magnifica and La Specialista ranges there is a dedicated descale indicator, which is less ambiguous.

The light that will not clear

De’Longhi publishes the cause: the cycle was not completed. The fix is to repeat it with water only, and to fill the tank to MAX for the last two rinses. The machine counts the volume that passes through during rinsing, and a short-filled tank means it never sees enough to consider the job done.

This is worth knowing because it looks exactly like a faulty sensor, and it is not.

Descaling too often

If it feels like you are descaling constantly, the machine is probably right and the setting is wrong. De’Longhi’s documented answer for both the Dedica Arte and the Magnifica S is to check the water hardness setting: set to High, the machine schedules descaling on the assumption of very hard water.

What the cycle does not do

On a bean-to-cup machine, descaling and cleaning the brew unit are two different jobs. The descale clears mineral scale from the water circuit. The brew unit accumulates coffee oils and compacted puck residue, and no amount of descaler reaches it. If your coffee has gone bitter rather than weak, the brew unit is the more likely culprit.

Descaler that works

EcoDecalk is De’Longhi’s own and is correctly dosed for these machines. Any espresso-formulated descaler is a reasonable alternative.

Running the cycle

Procedures differ by range: the Magnifica Evo guide covers the cycle and the brew unit, and the Dinamica guide covers what that cycle misses. For decoding the lights themselves, what each De’Longhi pattern means has the official answers.

Questions about this part

What does the flashing steam light mean on a Dedica?

On the Dedica EC685 that is the descale alert. De'Longhi's own help centre answer for a flashing steam light is that the appliance needs descaling. It is not a steam fault and cleaning the wand will not clear it.

The descale light is still on after descaling. Why?

De'Longhi's documented cause is that the cycle was not completed. Repeat it with water only, and fill the tank to MAX for the last two rinses. The machine will not clear the alert until it has seen the full rinse volume pass through.

Why does my De'Longhi ask to descale so often?

Water hardness set too high. De'Longhi names this specifically for the Dedica Arte and Magnifica S: if the hardness level is set to High, the machine schedules descaling far more frequently than your water needs.

Does descaling clean the brew unit?

No, and this catches out bean-to-cup owners. Descaling clears mineral scale from the water circuit. The brew unit collects coffee oils and puck residue, which is a separate job with a separate procedure.

Can I use vinegar in a De'Longhi?

Not advisable. The water circuit on an espresso machine carries more seals and plastic than a drip brewer, and the residual smell survives repeated rinsing. A proper descaler is a few dollars.
