The fix, step by step

  1. Preheat the cup

    Run a cup of hot water with no capsule and tip it out, then brew into the warm cup. This alone resolves most complaints.

  2. Let the machine warm up

    Turn it on and wait until the light is steady before the first shot. Brewing during heat-up gives you a cool cup.

  3. Check energy saving

    If the machine switched itself off between uses it starts from cold. On most models the auto-off delay can be extended.

  4. Compare short and long

    If a short espresso is hot and a Lungo is not, that is physics rather than a fault - more liquid, more surface area, more cooling.

  5. Descale

    Scale on the thermoblock insulates it. This is the genuine machine-side cause and a full cycle with proper descaler is the fix.

  6. Rinse afterwards

    Run a clean tank through. Descaler left in the circuit will spoil the next several cups.

The cup takes the heat

Scale on the thermoblock is the real machine-side cause. Limescale is a poor conductor, so a coated heating element cannot transfer heat into the water efficiently. This comes on gradually – a machine that has slowly got cooler over months rather than suddenly is describing exactly this.
