Nespresso Vertuo Not Pumping Water: The Order to Check

1. Reseat the tank
Take the water tank right off and refit it firmly. The tank feeds through a valve in its base that only opens when it is properly clipped down. A tank sitting slightly proud draws air, and the machine behaves exactly as though the pump has failed.
2. Prime the machine
After the tank has run dry, the pump often needs help refilling the line. Fill the tank at least halfway, then run two or three water-only cycles with no capsule back to back. Some units need several attempts before water appears – that is normal after running dry, and it is not a fault.
3. Look for an airlock
If cycles still deliver nothing, unplug the machine, lift it and give the side a firm slap or two to shift a trapped bubble, then repeat the water-only cycles. Crude, but it is the standard fix for this symptom on small pump machines.
4. Descale
Scale builds in the thermoblock and the narrow tubing. If the machine has been getting slower over months and the descale alert has been showing, run a full descale cycle with proper solution and rinse thoroughly afterwards.
5. Check the capsule path is not the real problem
If water-only cycles deliver a full flow but brewing with a capsule delivers nothing, the machine is fine and the capsule is not being pierced or seated properly. Clean the capsule holder and the head seal, and try a fresh capsule from a sealed sleeve.
When to stop
If the tank is seated, priming cycles have been tried repeatedly, the airlock trick has been tried and a descale has been run, the pump or the flow meter is the remaining candidate. Both are inside the case, and on a domestic Vertuo the repair cost usually exceeds what the machine is worth. Do not keep cycling it in the meantime – a pump running dry heats up, and heat is what finishes them off.
Priming, and why it takes more than one try
The pump in a Vertuo is a small vibration pump. It moves water well and air badly. After the tank runs dry, the intake line holds air, and the pump has to compress that air enough to draw water past it. Sometimes one cycle does it. Often it takes three, and occasionally more.
Run the water-only cycles back to back rather than waiting between them — each one leaves the line slightly wetter, which helps the next. If nothing has changed after four or five attempts, stop and move to the airlock step rather than continuing.
The tank valve, tested properly
Remove the tank completely, fill it, and stand it on a dry towel on the worktop for ten minutes.
- Towel stays dry — the tank body is sound. If the machine still will not draw, the valve is not opening when the tank is seated, or the machine’s intake is blocked.
- Towel gets wet — the tank or its valve is leaking and the tank is the part.

Scale, and how it presents on a Vertuo
Scale rarely stops a Vertuo outright. It slows it: longer brew times, cooler coffee, thinner crema, and eventually cycles that stop short. If those symptoms preceded the total failure by weeks or months, descale before assuming the pump has gone — sometimes a heavily scaled machine will draw again after a proper descale and a rinse.
If the machine will not pump at all, you cannot descale it, because the cycle needs to move water. In that case the priming and airlock steps come first by necessity.
Separating the water path from the brew path
Run a water-only cycle with no capsule, then a normal brew with one. If the first delivers a full volume and the second delivers nothing, the pump and lines are fine and the fault is at the capsule: the holder, the head seal, or a capsule that is not being read and pierced.
That is good news — those are cleaning jobs rather than hardware failures.
The point where it stops being worth it
Pump and flow-meter replacement on a Vertuo means opening a sealed case to reach mains-connected parts.
