Cuisinart drip machines have a self-clean cycle and a CLEAN light, and the single most useful thing to know about them is that the light is a counter, not a sensor. It comes on after a set number of brews regardless of what your water is actually doing.
On hard water that means you are overdue before it asks. On soft water it asks too early.

Why the light will not go out
This is the most common complaint, and it is almost never a fault. The machine counts the water passing through during the clean run; a reservoir that runs dry partway means the count never completes and the light stays on.
Fill to MAX before starting, press CLEAN, and let it run all the way through the rinse phases without interrupting it.
Take the filter out first
On any model with a charcoal cartridge in the reservoir, it comes out before the descaler goes in. Acid exhausts charcoal in a single pass, so leaving it in wastes the cartridge and does nothing for the descale. A fresh one goes in after the final rinse.
Never put descaler through a grinder
Worth stating plainly because Grind & Brew owners ask. The grinder side is cleaned dry — brush, or grinder tablets that absorb oils. Acid belongs in the water path only.
That distinction explains the other common complaint: a Grind & Brew that still tastes bad after a descale. Scale makes coffee slow and cool; oils in the chute and basket make it bitter, and no descaler reaches them.
Solution or vinegar
On these drip machines, either. White vinegar at 1:1 costs almost nothing and needs one extra rinse tank before the coffee stops tasting of it; formulated descaler rinses out faster for a few dollars more. Never mix the two, and never put bleach in a coffee machine.
On the combo machines, descale both sides
The SS-15 and Coffee Center models run a pod path and a carafe path that scale independently. Running the cycle once on one side leaves the other untouched — the same trap as a K-Duo.
