How often the K-Duo actually needs descaling
Every three to six months is the working range for most households. Water hardness is what moves the number, not how many cups you pull:
- Soft water — six months is realistic.
- Moderately hard water — three to four months.
- Hard water — every two to three months, and expect the descale light sooner than that.
If you do not know your water hardness, a cheap test strip is worth more than guessing. Scale that is caught on schedule rinses out in one cycle; scale left for a year has to be dissolved in stages.
What you need
Descaling solution or plain white vinegar both work. Solution is formulated to be gentler on seals and rinses out with less water; vinegar is cheaper and needs more rinse cycles to stop the next few cups tasting of it. Do not use both at once, and never use bleach.
The descale
- Empty everything. Remove any pod, empty the carafe, and take the water filter out of the reservoir if yours has one. Descaler will exhaust a charcoal cartridge, so it comes out first and goes back in afterwards.
- Fill the reservoir. Add descaling solution and top up with fresh water to the level the bottle specifies, or use a 1:1 mix of white vinegar and water.
- Run the pod side. Place a large mug on the drip tray, close the brewer with no pod in it, and run the largest cup size. Discard each mug and repeat until the reservoir is nearly empty.
- Run the carafe side. Switch to carafe mode and run a full brew cycle with no grounds and no filter, so the solution passes through the second outlet too. Skipping this leaves half the machine untouched.
- Let it stand. Leave the machine off for thirty minutes with the solution still in the lines. This is the step most people skip, and it is the step that does the actual dissolving.
- Rinse properly. Wash the reservoir, refill with plain water, and run cycles on both sides until at least two full reservoirs have gone through. With vinegar, make it three.
- Refit the filter. Fit a new charcoal cartridge, not the one you took out.

When the descale light will not clear
The light is a timer on most brewers, not a sensor reading the actual scale level. If it stays lit after a full descale and rinse, that usually means the cycle was not completed in the way the machine counts — most often because the reservoir ran dry partway through and the brewer stopped mid-cycle. Refill and run a complete cycle from a full reservoir.
If the light clears but the brewer is still slow or delivering half a cup, scale was not the whole problem. A blocked entrance or exit needle on the pod side produces exactly the same symptoms and is a five-minute fix with a paperclip or a cleaning tool.
What descaling will not fix
Descaler dissolves mineral scale. It does not touch coffee oils, and it does nothing for a clogged needle, a failed pump or a leaking seal. If the machine was already sputtering and leaking before the descale, expect it to keep doing so afterwards.
Both sides of a K-Duo, and why people only do one
The pod side and the carafe side share a tank, a heater and a pump, but they have separate outlet paths after the split. Descaling solution pushed through the pod outlet never touches the carafe outlet, and vice versa. This is the single most common reason a K-Duo is still slow after what felt like a thorough descale.
The order matters less than the coverage. Run roughly half the solution through each side, and if you only have time for one full cycle, run whichever side you use more — then repeat the whole job sooner.
Why the thirty-minute stand is the actual cleaning step
Descaling is a chemical reaction, not a rinse. The acid needs contact time with the scale to dissolve it, and water pushed through a machine at brewing speed is in contact with each surface for a second or two. Standing solution in a warm machine for half an hour does more than three back-to-back cycles.
This is why people report that descaling “did nothing”. They ran cycles until the tank was empty, rinsed, and never let it sit.
Solution or vinegar?
- Descaling solution — formulated for the seals and plastics used in brewers, rinses out in fewer cycles, no residual smell. Costs $10-15 and does several descales.
- White vinegar at 1:1 — works chemically, costs almost nothing, and needs at least one extra rinse tank. The smell fades but the first two or three cups after are noticeably vinegary if you cut the rinse short.
Both are acids doing the same job. The trade is money against rinse time. What is not a trade-off: never mix them, and never use bleach in a coffee machine under any circumstances.
How often, and how to tell you are late
Every three to six months on moderate water, every two to three on hard water. Rather than counting months, watch for the three signs that the machine is already restricted: brewing takes noticeably longer than it used to, the coffee is no longer properly hot, and the cup volume has crept down. All three point at the same narrowing water path.
After the descale, if it is still slow
Scale is only one of two things that restrict a pod brewer. The other is coffee grounds in the entrance and exit needles, and descaler does nothing to those. If a full descale and rinse has not restored the flow, clear both needles before concluding anything about the pump — it is a five-minute job that fixes most of what is left.
