De’Longhi Portafilter Size: 51mm and Which Machines Take It

In short

De'Longhi home espresso machines - Dedica, Stilosa, EC155, ECP and BCO ranges - use a 51mm portafilter. That is smaller than the 54mm Breville and 58mm commercial standards, so most aftermarket espresso accessories will not fit. Check the listing says 51mm before ordering anything.

OEM or aftermarket?

Aftermarket is fine here Provided the dimensions match exactly. Check the critical size above against the old part before ordering — parts that look identical in photos frequently are not.

De’Longhi sits on its own size. Most espresso accessories on the market are made for 54mm Breville machines or 58mm commercial groups, and neither fits a Dedica. If you take one thing from this page, take the number: 51mm.

Which machines are 51mm

The Dedica range (EC680, EC685, EC695), the Stilosa, the long-running EC155, the ECP models and the BCO combi machines all use a 51mm basket. Accessories move freely between them, which is genuinely useful – a bottomless portafilter bought for an EC155 will fit a Dedica.

The exception matters. The La Specialista range uses a larger 54mm group. If you own one of those, everything on this page is the wrong size for you.

Why the size trips people up

Search for a bottomless portafilter and the results are dominated by 54mm and 58mm, because that is where the enthusiast market is. The listings do not always lead with the size, and a portafilter three millimetres too wide simply will not enter the group. Read the number before the brand name.

What a bottomless one actually gives you

A bottomless portafilter is a diagnostic instrument, not an upgrade. Removing the spouts lets you watch the underside of the basket during extraction, which makes channelling visible – the thin jets and sprays that mean water is finding a path through the puck instead of soaking it evenly.

It will not make a bad shot good. It tells you which of your grind, dose and tamp is at fault, which is worth a great deal if you are trying to improve and worth nothing if you are not going to change anything.

When the portafilter will not lock

If you have the right size and it still will not turn into the group, the usual cause is the group head gasket rather than the portafilter. Gaskets harden and swell with age until the portafilter cannot travel far enough to seat. De’Longhi’s own troubleshooting for a filter holder that cannot be attached points at the same thing.

The basket that goes inside is a separate decision: see pressurised versus non-pressurised baskets, which is the change that actually alters how the machine brews. If your machine is flashing at you rather than under-extracting, what each De’Longhi light pattern means covers that.

Questions about this part

What size portafilter does a De'Longhi Dedica use?

51mm. That applies across the EC680, EC685 and EC695 Dedica models. It is the same size used on the Stilosa, EC155 and the ECP range, so accessories move freely between those machines.

Will a 54mm Breville portafilter fit a De'Longhi?

No. 54mm is the Breville size and 51mm is the De'Longhi size, and the three-millimetre difference is more than enough that it will not lock into the group. The same applies to 58mm commercial gear.

Is a bottomless portafilter worth it on a Dedica?

As a diagnostic tool, yes. It shows you exactly where the extraction is channelling, which is otherwise invisible. It will not improve a shot on its own - it shows you what to fix in your grind and tamp.

Does the La Specialista use the same 51mm portafilter?

No. The La Specialista range moved to a larger 54mm group, so 51mm accessories bought for a Dedica will not fit it. Check which machine you actually have before ordering.

My portafilter will not lock into the group. What is wrong?

If the size is right, it is usually the group head gasket. A gasket that has hardened and swollen with age stops the portafilter turning far enough to lock. De'Longhi's own troubleshooting for a filter holder that will not attach points at the same place.
