OEM or aftermarket?
The Gaggia Classic’s most underrated feature is a number: 58mm. It is the commercial portafilter standard, and it is the reason a relatively inexpensive home machine has access to the entire professional accessory market.
What 58mm buys you
Most home espresso machines sit on proprietary or semi-proprietary sizes – De’Longhi at 51mm, Breville at 54mm – which limits you to what those brands and a handful of aftermarket makers produce. At 58mm you are buying from the same shelf as commercial cafes: precision baskets, distribution tools, puck screens, tampers, bottomless portafilters.
That matters more over the life of the machine than any single part. A Classic can be upgraded piece by piece for years because the parts exist.
The Baby exception
Pre-2015 Baby models share the 58mm diameter but differ in ear spacing, which is why careful listings name the Baby separately rather than lumping it in with the Classic. If you own one, buy from a listing that mentions it. The diameter matching is not sufficient on its own.
What a bottomless portafilter shows you
Cutting the spouts off exposes the underside of the basket during extraction. What you are looking for is channelling – thin fast jets or side sprays that mean water has found a path through the puck rather than saturating it evenly.
It is worth being clear that the tool diagnoses rather than fixes. The remedy is always upstream: grind finer, distribute more evenly, tamp level. The portafilter just stops you guessing which.
Not every Gaggia has one
The Brera and Gaggia’s other bean-to-cup machines have an internal brew group instead of a portafilter. If that is what you own, this page does not apply and cleaning the Brera brew group is the relevant job.
Portafilters that fit
All 58mm. The Gaggia-branded holder is the safe default; the aftermarket bottomless options are cheaper and equally sound on a part with no electrical or pressure-safety role.
