Nespresso Vertuo Leaking Coffee: Find the Source First
Dry the machine, brew once with paper towel underneath, and see where it is wet. Coffee around the head means the chamber seal; clear water at the back means the tank.

The fix, step by step

Dry and towel test
Dry the machine, place towels under and behind, run one brew, then check which towel is wet.

Remove it and wash in warm soapy water, paying attention to the rim.

A leaking Vertuo is nearly always leaking in one of three places, and they need completely different fixes. Before you buy anything, find out which one you have – it takes one brew cycle and a paper towel.

Find the source first
Dry the machine completely. Put a folded paper towel under it, another behind the drip tray, and run a brew with a used capsule. Then look at which towel is wet.
- Coffee around the capsule holder, or spraying from the top of the machine – the chamber seal or a badly seated capsule.
- Clear water underneath, at the back – the tank or its valve, not the coffee path.
- Coffee in the used-capsule bin faster than usual, with weak coffee in the cup – the capsule is not sealing against the head, so extraction is bypassing.
Chamber seal leaks
The Vertuo spins the capsule at high speed against a seal. Coffee oils and grounds build on that seal, and once there is a ridge of dried residue the capsule cannot seat flat. That is the most common cause of coffee escaping around the head.
- Unplug the machine and open the head.
- Remove the capsule holder and wash it in warm soapy water. Pay attention to the rim.
- Wipe the seal in the head itself with a damp cloth – not a scourer, which will score it.
- Check the seal for splits or flat spots. A seal that has hardened will not recover, and that is a service part.
- Refit and run two water-only cycles.
Capsules that do not seat
Vertuo capsules have a barcode rim that the machine reads and seals against. A dented rim, a refilled capsule, or a third-party capsule with slightly different rim thickness will all leak. If the leak started when you switched capsule brands, that is your answer.
Water underneath rather than coffee
Clear water at the back usually means the water tank or its valve, not the brew path. Take the tank off, dry the machine, fill the tank and stand it on a dry towel on the worktop for ten minutes. If the towel gets wet with the tank off the machine, the tank is the fault.
When it is worth stopping
Descaling will not fix a leak. Neither will running more cycles. If the chamber seal is split rather than dirty, or the machine leaks from the base with a dry tank, water is getting into the electronics and the machine should be taken out of service. On a mid-range Vertuo the economics rarely favour a paid repair.
Where a Vertuo leaks, and why the three faults look alike
All three present as “there is liquid where there should not be”, which is why people replace the wrong part. The towel test separates them because each fault leaks in a different place and at a different moment in the cycle.
- Chamber seal — leaks during the brew, at the head, and the liquid is coffee-coloured.
- Tank or valve — leaks whenever the tank is full, including with the machine switched off, and the liquid is clear.
- Capsule not sealing — no visible external leak, but weak coffee and a wetter-than-usual used capsule.
Cleaning the chamber seal without damaging it
The seal is a soft ring in the head that the capsule rim presses against. Dried coffee builds a ridge on it, and that ridge is what stops the next capsule sitting flat.
Use a damp cloth or a soft brush. Do not use a scourer, a fingernail, or any solvent — a scored seal leaks permanently and it is not a user-replaceable part on most models. If cleaning does not restore the seal and you can see splitting or flat spots, the machine needs a service or replacing.
Capsules, and the leak that started when you switched brand
The Vertuo reads a barcode on the capsule rim and seals against that same rim. Third-party and refillable capsules vary slightly in rim thickness and material. Some seal perfectly; some leak from day one.
If the leak began at the same time as a new box of capsules, test with one genuine capsule before doing anything else. It costs one coffee to rule out.
Why descaling is the wrong response
Descaler removes minerals from the water path. A leak is a sealing problem, and running acid through the machine does nothing about it — worse, if you use vinegar you will harden the very seal that is failing. This is the most common way a small leak becomes a permanent one.
When to stop using it
Water reaching the base of the machine is the line. If the towel underneath is wet with the tank removed and the machine dry inside, or if the seal is split rather than dirty, take it out of service. A mains appliance with water tracking into the base is not a wait-and-see fault, and on a mid-range Vertuo a paid repair usually costs more than the machine is worth.
