Step by step

  1. Empty and prepare

Capsule container and drip tray emptied, no capsule in the head, a litre container ready.

  2. Fill with solution

Descaler and water at the ratio on the packet.

  3. Enter descaling mode

Button hold with the head closed - the sequence is in your manual and varies by generation.

  4. Let it run

The cycle pumps in stages. Do not open the head partway through.

  5. Rinse twice

Clean tank, clean water, two full rinse cycles. One is not enough on a Vertuo.

  6. Exit descaling mode

Same button hold, or the machine stays in it.

The Vertuo Plus tells you when it wants descaling – the light changes colour and the machine will keep working for a while before it starts refusing. Do not wait for the refusal. Scale narrows the path to the brew head, and on a Vertuo that shows up as weak, cool coffee and a thinner crema long before the machine complains properly.

What to use

Nespresso’s own descaling kit is formulated for these machines and is the safe default. Universal descalers made for coffee machines also work. Do not use vinegar in a Vertuo. The brew head assembly holds seals that vinegar hardens, and the smell persists through more rinse cycles than most people are willing to run.

Before you start

  • Empty the used-capsule container and the drip tray – a descale cycle produces a lot of liquid.
  • Have a container of at least a litre to catch the output.
  • Remove any capsule. The cycle runs with the head closed and empty.
  • Set aside about twenty minutes. Interrupting a descale part way is what leaves machines in a stuck state.

Running it

  1. Fill the tank with the descaling solution and water at the ratio on the packet.
  2. Put the machine into descaling mode. On the Vertuo Plus this is a button hold with the head closed – the exact sequence is printed in the manual for your unit, and it differs slightly between Vertuo generations. The machine confirms with a light change.
  3. Let the cycle run. It pumps the tank through in stages, pausing between them. Do not open the head while it runs.
  4. Rinse. Wash the tank thoroughly, refill with clean water, and run the rinse cycle. Then run a second one. Vertuo machines hold solution in the head assembly and one rinse frequently is not enough.
  5. Exit descaling mode using the same button hold, or the machine will stay in it.

If the light stays on afterwards

The alert clears when the machine registers a completed descale cycle. It stays lit if the cycle was interrupted, if the tank ran dry mid-cycle, or if the machine was never actually put into descaling mode and you simply ran brews with solution in the tank. That last one is common and it does clean the path, but it will not clear the alert.

What to buy

Do not substitute vinegar on a Vertuo. It hardens the head seals, which is the part that leaks.

What descaling will not fix

It will not stop a leak, it will not fix a machine that will not pump after running dry, and it will not clean coffee residue off the head seal. Residue is a warm soapy water job on the capsule holder, and it is what causes most leaks around the head.

What the alert actually counts

The descaling light on a Vertuo is a cycle counter with a water-volume component, not a sensor reading mineral build-up. It knows how much water has passed through and how long since the last completed descale routine. That has two practical consequences.

First, on soft water the alert arrives before the machine needs it, and running the cycle anyway does no harm. Second, on hard water the machine can be visibly struggling — weak crema, cooler coffee, longer brew times — well before the light changes. Trust the symptoms over the light in either direction.

Why the head assembly holds solution

The Vertuo brew head is not a simple outlet. The capsule is spun at speed against a seal, and the chamber around it has volume that does not drain fully between cycles. Descaling solution sits in that volume, and a single rinse cycle displaces some of it but not all.

Two rinse cycles, each with a freshly washed and refilled tank, is the reliable minimum. If the next coffee still tastes sharp, run a third — it costs water and two minutes.

Vinegar and the seals

Acetic acid hardens the silicone and rubber seals in the head assembly. Hardened seals do not compress properly against the capsule rim, and the result is coffee escaping around the head — the exact fault people then spend money trying to fix. The damage is gradual and does not show up after one use, which is why the advice gets ignored.

Nespresso’s own kit and any universal coffee-machine descaler both avoid the problem. On a machine in this price bracket it is not a saving worth making.

The cycle stalls: three causes

  1. The container filled and the machine paused. A descale cycle produces more liquid than a normal brew. Use at least a litre of capacity.
  2. The tank ran dry partway. The machine stops and the counter never registers a completed cycle, so the light stays on.
  3. The head was opened mid-cycle. Same result. Once started, leave it alone until it finishes.

If any of those happened, refill and run the whole routine again from the start rather than trying to resume.

What descaling will not do

It will not stop a leak, it will not clean coffee residue off the capsule holder, and it will not fix a machine that lost its prime after running dry. Residue is a warm soapy water job on the holder, once a week, and it prevents more faults than descaling does.

Common questions

Can I use vinegar in a Nespresso Vertuo?

No. It hardens the head seals and the smell persists through many rinse cycles.

Why is the descaling light still on after descaling?

The cycle was interrupted, the tank ran dry, or the machine was never put into descaling mode - running brews with solution in the tank does not clear the alert.

How often does a Vertuo Plus need descaling?

About every three months, or whenever the alert light changes.

Will descaling fix a leaking Vertuo?

No. Leaks are seals and residue, not scale.
