De’Longhi Filter Basket: Pressurised vs Non-Pressurised
De'Longhi ships its home machines with a pressurised (dual-wall) basket that creates crema artificially through a small hole, so it works with almost any grind. A non-pressurised (single-wall) 51mm basket brews properly but demands a real espresso grinder. Swap only if you have one - otherwise the shot gets worse, not better.
Does it fit your machine?
Match your model number exactly — the code on the rating label, not the name on the front of the machine.
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| Dedica EC680 / EC685 / EC695 | 51mm. Both basket types available. |
| Stilosa EC230 / EC260 | 51mm. |
| EC155 / ECP3420 | 51mm. Ships pressurised. |
| Any 51mm De'Longhi portafilter | Baskets are interchangeable within the size. |
| La Specialista | 54mm - these baskets do not fit. |

OEM or aftermarket?
This is the cheapest part on a De’Longhi that genuinely changes how the machine brews, and it is also the one most likely to make your coffee worse if you buy it for the wrong reason.

What the pressurised basket is doing
De’Longhi ships the Dedica, Stilosa and EC155 with a dual-wall basket. There are two layers: an inner one with normal holes and an outer one with a single small hole. Water passes through the coffee, collects between the walls, then gets forced out through that one restriction. The foam that comes out looks like crema and is really aeration.
The point of the design is tolerance. Because the machine makes its own resistance, the grind barely matters. Supermarket pre-ground works. That is not a flaw – it is the reason the machine is usable without a three-hundred-dollar grinder.
What the non-pressurised basket demands
A single-wall basket is a plain bed of fine holes. Now the coffee itself has to provide the resistance, which means the grind has to be fine, even and dosed consistently. Get it right and you are making real espresso. Get it wrong and water finds the easy path, the shot gushes in five seconds and tastes thin and sour.
The honest test before you buy one: can your grinder adjust in small steps, and does it produce a consistent fine grind? If the answer is no, the pressurised basket is doing you a favour.
The order to change things
Grinder first, then technique, then basket. Swapping the basket first removes the safety net without giving you anything to replace it with. People do it the other way round, taste something worse, and conclude their machine is bad.
Sizing
51mm across the De’Longhi home range, matching the portafilter. Baskets move freely between the Dedica, Stilosa, EC155 and ECP machines. The La Specialista is 54mm and takes none of these.
Baskets that fit
Both options below are 51mm. The precision basket is the better single-wall choice if you are committing to it; the plain stainless one is the cheaper way to find out whether you want to.

Questions about this part
What is the difference between a pressurised and non-pressurised basket?
A pressurised basket has two walls with a single small hole in the lower one. It forces the coffee through that restriction, which generates foam regardless of how the coffee is ground. A non-pressurised basket is a single wall of fine holes, so the coffee bed itself has to create the resistance. The second brews better and is far less forgiving.
Should I switch to a non-pressurised basket?
Only if you have a grinder that can hit espresso fineness and adjust in small steps. With pre-ground coffee or a blade grinder, a single-wall basket will gush and taste sour. The pressurised basket exists precisely so the machine works without a good grinder.
Will a non-pressurised basket make my espresso taste better?
It makes better espresso possible. On its own it usually makes things worse, because it removes the artificial resistance that was hiding a coarse or uneven grind. The basket is the last change to make, not the first.
What size basket does a De'Longhi Dedica take?
51mm, the same as the portafilter. Baskets are interchangeable across the 51mm De'Longhi machines, so a basket bought for an EC155 fits a Dedica.
My shot gushes out in five seconds with the new basket. What now?
That is the expected result of a single-wall basket with too coarse a grind, and it is a grinder problem rather than a basket fault. Grind finer in small steps until the shot takes roughly 25 to 30 seconds, or refit the pressurised basket.
