Nespresso Descaling Kit: What the Cycle Needs
Nespresso descaling kits contain two 100 ml sachets, enough for one full cycle plus rinse on most machines. Any descaler formulated for espresso machines works, but do not use vinegar - the acid attacks the seals and the smell survives an unreasonable number of rinse tanks. The rinse cycle is not optional.
Does it fit your machine?
Match your model number exactly — the code on the rating label, not the name on the front of the machine.
| Model | Notes |
|---|---|
| Vertuo, Vertuo Plus, Vertuo Next | One sachet per cycle. Descaling mode is entered from the button. |
| Pixie, CitiZ, Inissia, Essenza | Original line. Same solution, different cycle entry. |
| Lattissima range | Descale the milk system separately - the coffee cycle does not clear it. |
| Creatista and Expert | Same solution. Follow the machine's on-screen prompts. |
| Any espresso descaler | Works if it is formulated for espresso machines. Vinegar is not. |
Your model is not on this list. Do not assume it fits — send us the model number and we will check it.
OEM or aftermarket?
Descaling is the maintenance that decides how long a Nespresso lasts, and it is also where the worst home-remedy advice on the internet lives. This page covers what to use and what the cycle actually needs.

Why not vinegar
Vinegar dissolves scale, which is why the advice persists. It also attacks elastomer seals, and a capsule machine has considerably more of them – and more small-bore tubing – than a drip brewer. The damage is cumulative rather than immediate, which is what makes it easy to get away with once and regret over three years.
The smell is the more immediate problem. Acetic acid soaks into the plastic of the water circuit and survives an unreasonable number of rinse tanks. People end up tasting it in their coffee for weeks.
The rinse is part of the job
The step people skip is the one that matters most for taste. Once the descaling solution has been through, the circuit is full of it. Fill the tank with clean water and run the machine dry, then do it again if there is any smell of solution left.
Lattissima owners: two separate jobs
The Rapid Cappuccino System has its own cleaning routine. A coffee descale does not touch it, because milk residue and limescale are different problems in different parts of the machine. If your milk is not frothing properly, that is the milk system rather than the descale.
If the alert comes back too often
A machine asking to descale every few weeks is usually set to a harder water level than your supply actually is. That schedules maintenance far more often than needed. Check the hardness setting before assuming your water is unusually bad.
Descaler that works
Nespresso’s own kit is the safe default and comes correctly dosed. Any descaler formulated for espresso machines is a legitimate alternative.
Running the cycle
The procedure differs by machine: descaling a Vertuo covers the button sequence for the Vertuo range. If your machine is showing an orange light rather than a descale prompt, what that light actually means is worth reading first – on a Vertuo Plus it usually means a cycle is already running.

Questions about this part
Can I use vinegar to descale a Nespresso?
You can, and you will regret it. A capsule machine has more seals and small-bore tubing than a drip brewer, acetic acid degrades those seals over time, and the smell genuinely lingers through several rinse tanks. A proper descaler costs a few dollars and does not do either.
How many sachets does one descale use?
One 100 ml sachet per cycle on most machines, which is why the kit contains two - one for the descale now and one for the next one. Follow the dilution on the packet rather than guessing.
Do I have to run the rinse cycle?
Yes. Descaler left in the circuit ends up in your next coffee and tastes exactly as bad as it sounds. Fill the tank with clean water and run the machine through until it is empty, twice if the first tank still smells of solution.
Does a Lattissima need the milk system descaled too?
The milk system needs its own cleaning routine, which is separate from the coffee descale. Running a coffee descale does not clear the Rapid Cappuccino System, and milk residue is a different problem from scale.
How often should I descale a Nespresso?
The machine counts brews and tells you. If yours is alerting far more often than feels reasonable, the water hardness setting is likely higher than your actual supply.
