The FlexBrew – written as both “FlexBrew” and “Flex Brew” – is a combination brewer: a carafe side that brews from grounds and a single-serve side that takes a pod or a reusable filter. They share a water tank and a heater but have separate outlet paths, and each fouls in its own way. Cleaning routines written for a plain drip machine only cover half of it.

Weekly, both sides
- Carafe side: wash the brew basket and the carafe, including the lid. The drip-stop valve in the basket is where old grounds collect and it is what causes overflow.
- Single-serve side: remove the pod holder and the mesh filter, and rinse both under warm water. Coffee oils build in the mesh quickly and are what make single-serve cups taste bitter first.
- Wipe around both outlets and empty the drip tray.
Monthly: the single-serve needle
The single-serve side pierces pods, and that needle blocks with grounds exactly like any other pod machine. Unplug, lift out the holder, and clear the needle with a straightened paperclip – straight in, straight out. This is the fix for short or slow single-serve cups, and it costs nothing.
Every three months: descale, both paths
- Empty the tank, then fill with descaling solution and water, or a 1:1 white vinegar and water mix.
- Run a full carafe cycle with no grounds and no filter, into the carafe.
- Then run two single-serve cycles with no pod, into a large mug. This is the step that gets skipped, and it is why some FlexBrews stay slow on the pod side after a descale.
- Leave the machine off for thirty minutes with solution still in it.
- Rinse: two full tanks of clean water through the carafe side and at least two single-serve cycles. Three of each if you used vinegar.
If one side works and the other does not
That is genuinely useful diagnostic information. A carafe side that brews normally while the single-serve side dribbles means the shared water path is fine and the fault is at the single-serve needle or its outlet. The reverse – single-serve fine, carafe side slow – points at the carafe basket or its drip-stop rather than the pump.
One machine, two water paths
The FlexBrew shares a tank, a heater and a pump, then splits. The carafe side ends at a shower head over a basket; the single-serve side ends at a piercing needle and a small outlet. After the split, nothing you run through one branch touches the other.
That is the whole reason cleaning advice written for a plain drip machine leaves a FlexBrew half-dirty, and why a descale that “did nothing” usually did plenty — to the side you were not using.
The drip-stop valve, and the flood it causes
The carafe basket has a spring valve in its base held open by the carafe lid. Old grounds collect around it and it stops closing fully, or the lid is not seating and it never opens. Either way the basket overflows onto the plate within a couple of minutes.
Check it directly: with the basket out, press the valve with a finger. It should move freely and spring back. If it is gritty or sticky, wash the basket in warm soapy water and work the valve until it moves cleanly.
The single-serve needle
Same failure as any pod machine. Grounds build in the piercing needle, cups get shorter and slower, and eventually the machine dribbles. Unplug it, remove the pod holder, and clear the needle with a straightened paperclip — straight in, straight out.
Monthly is enough for a household machine. If you use a reusable mesh filter on that side, wash it after every use: mesh clogs faster than a pod does, and the oils it holds are the first thing you taste.
Descaling both branches
- Fill the tank with descaling solution, or a 1:1 white vinegar and water mix.
- Run a full carafe cycle with no grounds and no paper filter.
- Run two single-serve cycles with no pod into a large mug.
- Switch the machine off and leave it thirty minutes with solution still in it.
- Rinse: two full tanks through the carafe side, and at least two single-serve cycles. Three of each if you used vinegar.
Using one side to diagnose the other
Because the two branches share everything upstream, comparing them isolates a fault quickly:
- Carafe fine, pod side slow — shared path is good. The fault is the needle or its outlet.
- Pod side fine, carafe side slow — the basket, the drip-stop, or the shower head.
- Both slow — shared path. Scale, the intake screen, or the pump.
That last case is the only one where descaling is the first move.
