Check three things, not just the cup count

Capacity alone does not, because a ten-cup and a twelve-cup pot can share a diameter and differ in height, and height is what decides whether the pot clears the brew basket.
The lid does real work
On most Hamilton Beach drip machines the carafe lid physically pushes the drip-stop valve open when the pot is pushed home. That is why a warped, missing or wrong-pattern lid produces a specific and confusing symptom: the basket fills up and overflows while the pot stays empty.
