Descaling a De’Longhi Magnifica Evo: Cycle and Brew Unit
Run the guided descale when prompted, with the water filter removed and a 1.5 litre container ready. Then rinse the brew unit weekly - water only, never detergent.

Step by step
-
Remove the water filter
Descaler exhausts a charcoal cartridge.
-
Prepare a large container
At least 1.5 litres, so you never pause mid-cycle.
-
Run the guided cycle
Follow the screen and do not interrupt it. Refill rather than switching off.
-
Weekly: pull the brew unit
Rinse under warm water only. No detergent, ever.
-
Dry and refit
Wipe the compartment and empty the grounds drawer while it is open.
-
Grease the rails
Thin film of food-safe silicone every few months. Not on seals or the piston face.
Super-automatics like the Magnifica Evo hide their maintenance behind a menu, which makes it easy to believe the machine is looking after itself. It runs a proper guided descale cycle, and that cycle handles the water path well. What it does not touch is the brew unit – the removable assembly where the coffee is actually compressed and extracted – and that is the part that causes most of the faults people blame on scale.

The descale cycle
The machine prompts when its counter says so, and you should run it then rather than dismissing it. The cycle is guided on screen, but three things are worth knowing before you start:
- Remove the water filter first if yours is fitted. Descaler exhausts a charcoal cartridge and it is a waste to leave it in.
- Have a container of at least 1.5 litres under the spouts. The cycle moves a lot of liquid and pausing to empty a small jug mid-cycle risks interrupting it.
- Do not interrupt it. An interrupted descale leaves the machine mid-state and the alert will not clear. If the tank empties partway, refill and let it resume rather than switching off.
Use a descaler intended for super-automatics. Do not use vinegar in this machine – the internal circuit has more seals and plastic than a drip brewer, and acetic acid is hard on both.
The brew unit, which the machine never mentions
This is the maintenance that actually keeps a Magnifica running, and it takes five minutes a week:
- Open the service door and release the brew unit – it slides out.
- Rinse it under warm running water only. No detergent, ever. Soap residue in a brew unit taints every coffee afterwards and is very hard to purge.
- Let it drain and dry before refitting.
- Wipe out the compartment it sits in, and empty the grounds drawer while it is open.
Weekly for daily use. A brew unit that is left long enough seizes, and a seized unit is what turns into “the machine will not brew” a few months later.
Grease, sparingly
The brew unit has moving rails that need food-safe silicone grease every few months. A thin film on the rails only – not the seals, not the piston face. Over-greasing attracts coffee fines and makes the problem worse than no grease at all.
What descaling will not fix
Weak coffee, coffee that is not hot enough, or a machine that grinds but does not brew are brew-unit and grinder problems, not scale problems. Run the descale on schedule, but do not expect it to solve those.
The brew unit, in detail
The brew unit is a self-contained piston assembly. Ground coffee drops in, a piston compresses it, hot water passes through, and the spent puck is ejected into the grounds drawer. Everything about that description involves coffee touching moving parts.
What accumulates: fines packed into the upper screen, oil on the piston seals, and grounds in the rails the unit slides on. What that produces, in order — weaker coffee as the screen clogs, then a unit that is stiff to remove, then one that will not return to its home position, at which point the machine reports a fault and stops brewing.
Weekly rinsing under warm water prevents all of it. It takes two minutes.
Why never detergent
The brew unit contains seals and a porous screen. Detergent residue lodges in both and comes out slowly over dozens of subsequent brews, giving coffee a soapy edge that people chase for weeks. Warm water and, if needed, a soft brush is the whole method.
The same applies to the drip tray and grounds drawer, though those tolerate a little washing-up liquid because they are smooth plastic and rinse clean.
Grease, and how much is too much
The rails the brew unit slides on need a thin film of food-safe silicone grease every few months. The failure mode people create is over-greasing: excess grease migrates onto the seals and the piston face, then collects coffee fines, and the paste that forms makes the unit stiffer than no grease at all.
A smear you can barely see, on the rails only. Nothing on the seals, nothing on the piston.
Water hardness sets the descale interval, not the counter
The machine counts brews. Your water decides how much scale each brew leaves. If your kettle furs up within a month, run the descale when the machine asks and then again halfway to the next prompt — or fit the water filter and change it on schedule, which slows the whole process.
Descaling with the filter still installed wastes the cartridge: the resin absorbs the acid rather than letting it work.
Symptoms and where they actually come from
- Weak coffee — grinder set too coarse, dose too low, or a clogged brew unit screen. Not scale.
- Coffee not hot enough — scale on the heating circuit, or cups that are not pre-warmed. Both, usually.
- Grinds but will not brew — the brew unit is not returning to position. Remove, rinse, dry, refit.
- Machine asks to be emptied when it is empty — the tray sensor, not the tray.

Common questions
Can I use vinegar in a De’Longhi Magnifica?
No. The circuit has more seals and plastic than a drip machine and acetic acid is hard on both.
How often should I clean the brew unit?
Weekly with daily use. Warm water only - detergent taints every coffee afterwards.
The descale alert will not clear. Why?
The cycle was interrupted, usually because the tank ran dry or the machine was switched off partway.
My coffee is weak after descaling. What now?
That is a brew unit or grinder issue, not scale. Descaling does not affect extraction.

De’Longhi Espresso Machine Not Pumping Water
A De'Longhi that has run dry needs priming, not repairing. The order to work through before concluding the pump has failed.
De’Longhi Espresso Machine Leaking Water Underneath
On a De'Longhi the drip tray and the internal condensate tray fill separately, and one of them has no float. That accounts for most of these.
