A milk frother that has stopped working splits into two completely different situations, and the cost difference between them is several hundred dollars. Establishing which one you have takes about a minute.

First: is it blocked, or is it broken?

Take the steam tip off and run steam for one second with the bare tube.

  • Strong steam from the bare tube — the tip was blocked with dried milk. Nothing is broken. Clear it, which costs nothing, and adopt the purge-and-wipe habit so it does not return.
  • Nothing from the bare tube, on a machine at full temperature that has been descaled — the fault is in the steam circuit. Now the decision is real.

Most people arrive at this page in the first situation. It is worth ruling out before pricing anything.

What the repair actually costs

A steam solenoid or boiler fault on a domestic espresso machine is not a home repair — it is behind the case, it carries mains voltage and pressure, and it needs the machine stripped. Typical service pricing lands between $150 and $300 with labour.

That number is the whole decision, because it is also roughly what a good standalone frother costs.

The case for keeping the machine and adding a frother

An espresso machine that has lost its steam usually still does the harder job perfectly well. The pump, group head and temperature control are untouched; one circuit has failed. Replacing the whole machine throws away the parts that still work.

A standalone frother also fails less often, for a structural reason: it has no steam circuit to scale up and no sub-millimetre holes to block. The jug and the whisk disc lift out and wash. Most of what kills a steam wand simply does not exist on one.

What you give up is steaming and pulling a shot simultaneously, and a piece of counter space.

When to replace the machine instead

If the steam failure has arrived alongside other symptoms — weak pump, leaking group, shots that will not come up to pressure — then the frother is not really the question. Price a whole machine, because you are looking at a second repair shortly after the first.

The same applies if the machine is a pod brewer with a sealed frother unit. Those are rarely repairable at all, and a standalone is almost always cheaper than the alternative.

Before you decide

Rule out the two free causes first. A wand that has never been deep-cleaned is blocked, not broken, and ten minutes with a pin settles it. A machine overdue for descaling can lose steam pressure gradually until it looks like a failure.

Only after both of those is the repair-or-replace question worth asking.

Is it worth repairing a steam wand?

If it is blocked, there is nothing to repair - it is a ten-minute clean and it costs nothing. A genuine steam circuit failure is different: a solenoid or boiler job on a domestic espresso machine typically runs $150-300 with labour, which is the price of a good standalone frother.

How do I know which one I have?

Take the tip off and run steam for a second. Strong steam from the bare tube means the tip was blocked and the machine is fine. Nothing from a bare tube at full temperature, on a machine that has been descaled, points at the circuit.

Does a standalone frother texture milk as well?

For flat whites and cappuccinos at home, yes - an induction frother gives repeatable microfoam without technique. What it will not do is let you steam and pull a shot at the same time, and it takes counter space.

Should I just replace the whole machine?

Only if other things are failing too. A machine that pulls good shots and has lost only its steam is worth keeping, and adding a frother is the cheaper half of that decision. If the pump is also weak or the group is leaking, price a whole machine instead.
