The reservoir is the part people break. It comes off every few days, it is thin translucent plastic, and it lands on a hard worktop when it slips. The good news is that it is a genuinely replaceable part rather than a reason to bin the machine. The bad news is that unlike the water filter cartridge, reservoirs are not universal – the tank from a K-Classic will not sit on a K-Elite.
Identify your brewer before you order
The model name is printed on the front of most brewers, and always on the sticker underneath. Buy against that name, not against “Keurig” alone. Listings are specific for a reason: the tank’s footprint, the position of the outlet valve and the lid geometry all change between series.
Three things to check against the listing photo:
- The valve position in the base. This is what actually mates with the brewer. If it sits in a different corner, the tank will seat but never feed.
- Lid included or not. Some replacements ship as tank only. If yours cracked at the hinge, you need the version with the lid.
- Handle or no handle. K-Elite style tanks have a moulded handle; K-Classic tanks do not.
When a crack is worth replacing over
Not every mark is a failure. A crack that weeps only when the tank is full is still a failure – the water ends up under the machine and eventually in the base, where the electronics are. Hairline cracks in translucent plastic also propagate every time the tank is refilled with cold water. Replace rather than patch; silicone sealant in a drinking-water tank is not a fix.
If the tank is intact but the machine still will not draw, the reservoir is probably not your problem. Work through the no-pod test first before spending anything.
Keeping the replacement alive longer
Two habits do most of the work. Lift the tank by its body rather than the lid, because the lid hinge is the usual break point. And empty it if the machine will sit unused for more than a few days – standing water grows biofilm on the intake screen, which starves the pump and gets blamed on the tank.
While the tank is off, wash the mesh screen in the base with warm soapy water and rinse it properly. A fresh charcoal water filter keeps that screen cleaner for longer, and a tank that is regularly emptied does not need descaling any more often than the manual says.
Series, not size
Every full-size Keurig holds roughly the same volume, so the cup count on the box tells you nothing about which tank fits. What differs between series is the footprint, where the outlet valve sits in the base, whether there is a moulded handle, and how the lid attaches.

The valve is the part that matters
A reservoir feeds through a spring-loaded valve in its base. Seating the tank pushes a pin that opens it. If the valve sits in a different position on a compatible tank, the tank will sit on the machine, look correct, and never open — which reads exactly like a failed pump.
Compare the base of the listing photo against your old tank before ordering. It takes ten seconds and it is the difference between a working brewer and a return.
Cracks: which ones matter
- Surface scuffing and cloudiness — cosmetic. Cloudiness is usually mineral film and comes off with a descaler soak.
- A crack that weeps only when full — replace. The water goes under the machine and eventually into the base, where the electronics live.
- A hairline at the lid hinge — replace soon. Hinges carry the load every time you lift the tank and they fail suddenly.
Do not seal a drinking-water tank with silicone or epoxy. Neither is food-safe in this application, and neither holds on flexing thin-wall plastic.
The screen underneath
While the tank is off, wash the mesh screen in the base. On a machine that has been in service a couple of years this is often coated with a soft film that starves the pump — a fault that presents as slow brewing and gets blamed on scale. Warm soapy water and a soft brush is all it takes.
Habits that decide how long the new one lasts
Lift by the body, not the lid. Empty the tank if the machine will sit unused for more than a few days. Refill with cool water rather than hot — repeated hot fills craze thin plastic over time. And rinse it weekly rather than topping up indefinitely, because a tank that is never emptied grows a film long before it looks dirty.
