How to Clean a Steam Wand (and What Descaler Will Not Do)
Purge and wipe after every use, deep-soak the tip weekly. Milk residue is neither scale nor coffee oil, so neither descaler nor a backflush tablet touches it. The tip holes are under a millimetre - they need soaking and a pin, not chemistry.

Step by step

Purge immediately after steaming
One second of steam into the drip tray, before you do anything else. This clears milk drawn back up the tube.

Wipe while warm
A damp cloth down the wand. Milk wiped off wet comes away; milk left to dry has to be soaked out later.

Weekly: unscrew the tip
It comes off by hand on most machines. If it will not turn, soak the wand end in hot water for ten minutes first.

Soak the tip
Ten minutes in hot water, or in a cleaning tablet dissolved in hot water if it has been neglected.

Clear every hole with a pin
Work each hole individually. One blocked hole is enough to kill the whirlpool while steam still comes through.

Soak the wand tube too
Some machines let you swing the wand into a jug of hot cleaner and pull a little steam through to draw it in. Otherwise soak the removable section.

Refit and purge
Hand-tight, then purge once before the next milk.
Milk residue is the third maintenance job on an espresso machine, and it is the one that gets confused with the other two most often. People run a descale cycle, find the wand still blocked, and conclude the machine is faulty.
It is not. Descaler and cleaning tablets both leave a steam wand exactly as they found it.
Three deposits, three different jobs
- Mineral scale — inside the boiler and water lines. Cleared with acid, by descaling. Symptoms: slow flow, weak steam, coffee not properly hot.
- Coffee oils — in the group head and shower screen. Cleared with an alkaline tablet during a backflush. Symptoms: bitter, muddy shots.
- Milk residue — in and on the steam wand tip. Cleared with hot water, soaking time and a pin. Symptoms: no steam, or steam that will not texture milk.
Doing one does not do the others. A machine that has been neglected usually needs all three.
The habit that replaces the repair
Purge for one second and wipe the wand while it is still warm, every single time. That is the entire preventive routine, it takes five seconds, and it is why some machines never block and others block constantly.
Milk dries inside the tip at steaming temperature within minutes. Wiped wet, it comes off on a cloth. Left to dry, it has to be soaked out with the tip unscrewed.
The weekly soak
Take the tip off, soak it in hot water for ten minutes, and clear each hole with a pin. The holes are the mechanism — they are what creates the whirlpool that textures milk, and one blocked hole is enough to ruin it while still letting steam through.
If the tip will not unscrew, do not reach for pliers. The metal is soft and rounds off. Soak the whole wand end first; the milk holding it will give way.
When cleaning is not the answer
If the tip is off, the bare tube gives strong steam, and the machine is at full temperature, the wand is clean and something upstream is wrong. Work through the steam fault rather than scrubbing harder.
And if the frother is the only thing that has failed on an otherwise healthy machine, it is worth pricing a standalone frother against the repair before booking a service.
Common questions
Does descaler clean the steam wand?
No, and this is the most common misunderstanding on these machines. Descaler is an acid that dissolves mineral scale inside the water circuit. The residue in a steam wand is milk protein and fat on the outside and inside of the tip. Different deposit, different place, different chemistry. A descale cycle can leave a completely blocked wand untouched.
What about backflush cleaning tablets?
Also no. Those are alkaline and clear coffee oils from the group head during a backflush. The steam wand is not in that water path at all.
How often is enough?
Purge and wipe every single time, without exception - that prevents almost everything. A weekly deep soak with the tip off handles what the wipe misses. If you only steam milk occasionally, deep-soak after each session instead.
Can I soak the tip in vinegar?
You can, but it is the wrong tool. Vinegar is an acid aimed at mineral scale; milk residue responds to heat, time and a dedicated milk-line cleaner or an alkaline tablet. Hot water alone does most of the job.
The wand smells of old milk.
That is residue inside the tube rather than the tip. Draw hot cleaning solution up through the wand if your machine allows it, or soak the removable section. Smell is a reliable sign the purge-and-wipe habit has slipped.
Is a stainless tip safe in the dishwasher?
It will not be damaged, but it will not be cleaned either - a dishwasher jet cannot reach inside a sub-millimetre hole. Hand soak and a pin is the only thing that clears them.
